Whether it is a notebook or a desktop computer, the quality of the display/screen is an important component that directly affects the user experience, like the CPU core graphics and other system core hardware. So what about the screen when you buy a notebook, especially the game, can you count on an excellent screen? Let's talk about it today.

Is it really useful to refresh the "E-sports screen"?

Since last year, due to the cost reduction of high refresh screens, many game manufacturers have begun to talk about the high refreshing "e-sports screen" from the flagship to the mainstream game market. So high refresh screen really makes sense?
High refresh rate gaming screens generally have a refresh rate of computer monitor arm  up to 120 Hz or even 144 Hz, and the display we generally use is only 60 Hz, which means that a high refresh display can output more different display capabilities in the same time. With a powerful graphics card, you can double the visual fluency. This kind of navigation feature makes high-refresh displays extremely advantageous in FPS games where the viewing angle is very fast and the accuracy is extremely high. This is also the reason why the high refresh screen is called "e-sports screen".

The e-sports screen is good, but not every player needs it. Its main user base is also aimed at players like FPS and action games like Watching Pioneer, which can greatly improve the operating level. For the players of MOBA and RPG games, the improvement of the game experience is actually not big.

However, some notebook products currently use 144Hz e-sports screen, but the hardware level is not high. GTX 1050 graphics card or GTX 1050Ti graphics card is difficult to keep the frame rate of most shooting games far above 60FPS. It is extremely difficult to run 144Hz. The actual gaming experience of the player is not much improved. On the contrary, the price of the mainstream game, which should have a higher cost performance, has been pushed up a lot, which has certain side effects. The author personally believes that at least GTX 1060 graphics card can play a good role in the high refreshing e-sports screen, low-end graphics card power distribution screen products are more of a gimmick marketing strategy.

Of course, in addition to the performance of the game, the high-refresh screen can also achieve a smoother operation experience in daily use, especially in the scenes of web browsing and fast operation, the experience is still improved.

Material is important, away from the TN screen

Since this article is about the topic of notebook screen selection, the first thing to talk about is the choice of screen material types.

According to our previous experience, the screen of TN material is in absolute disadvantage in terms of color, contrast and viewing angle due to innate reasons, while IPS material has a larger gap in response time than TN material. Given that most players are less demanding on the corresponding delays, IPS screens are still the best choice for most regular players.
Of course, there are some slightly special examples, such as the high color gamut on the ASUS Flying Fortress FX80GE, the "wide viewing angle" TN screen. Compared with the ordinary TN material screen, there is a certain improvement in the viewing angle, and the color gamut coverage also reaches the level of 83% NTSC. This shows that TN does not necessarily kill "a stick." But this is just a case. In addition to these examples, if a notebook that is on sale in 2018 is still using a TN screen, please give it up immediately.

Resolution: Is 4K useful?

After talking about the material, let's talk about the resolution. You may not believe that there are still 1366x768 resolution notebooks on the market in 2018. In fact, at this stage, 1920x1080, which we often say 1080P full HD resolution is the most suitable choice for most notebook products. Whether it is software adaptation or clarity, it can meet the needs of most players. At the same time, 1080P is also a typical reference value for most game optimizations at present. Mainstream graphics cards can run mainstream games at this resolution.

Of course, some flagship notebook products on the market are also available in 4K or 3840x2160 resolution versions. In theory, four times the pixel density of 1080P means far more clarity than ordinary notebooks. However, due to the actual use, due to software adaptation, notebook products with 4K resolution screens will encounter quite a lot of flaws. In addition, even the current high-end desktop graphics card is difficult to run most of the stand-alone works at 4K resolution, so in fact, the current 4K resolution notebook screen is fully technically achievable, and the distance is really practical. There is considerable distance.

Border: screen ratio is justice
I believe that most players who are concerned about mobile phones are familiar with the term "screen ratio". In the development of the notebook industry in the past two years, the proportion of narrow border high screen has also become a new trend.

A narrower border not only means a higher screen ratio and a better look and feel, but also a larger size screen in a smaller body. The recently launched narrow-frame game has been able to insert a 14-inch product into a 15.6-inch screen. Greatly improved the portability of traditional game books. In the future, there will be a 17-inch narrow-frame game, and the size of the body can be controlled at the level of the traditional 15.6-inch product, which will let the 17-inch screen truly enter the mainstream game market.

Color: Targeting 100% sRGB

In terms of gamut, many players now like to use 45% and 72% NTSC gamut coverage to summarize the two levels of IPS screen gamut. In fact, such a formulation is not accurate. In general, the color gamut target value of notebook products should be 100% sRGB, the color space of sRGB can be completely contained by NTSC color gamut, 100% sRGB=72% NTSC formula can be established from left to right, but 72% NTSC It is not always possible to accurately cover all sRGB color spaces, so the formula cannot be established from right to left.
Since the current color gamut standards for PC platforms and photos, videos, etc. are all sRGB, PC display devices are generally tuned with 100% sRGB as the target.

Therefore, if a notebook is officially 100% sRGB, the color is generally better than the nominal 72% NTSC. Of course, NTSC color gamut coverage is only about 45%, sRGB can only cover more than 60% of the second-class IPS screen, basically can not restore accurate color, the display effect is far lower than the above two standards, is not recommended to buy one Class screen. The level of experience is only slightly higher than the "unavailable" level of the TN screen.
